Brooke G of Springfield
Foster Goes Green

I am a member of Foster Memorial Church located in Springfield. Church has always been a big part of my life, so I knew I wanted it to be the focus of my Gold Award project.

I noticed that whenever there was a church function, paper and plastic products were being used.  I worked with the pastor and decided to initiate “Foster Goes Green!” I worked with my team to organize events to raise awareness of the project and to raise funds. Events included a Sandwich and Heavenly Cake Sale, Christmas Cookie Sale, Casserole Fundraiser, and a concert. By the completion of my Gold Award project, we were able to install an energy efficient industrial dishwasher in the church kitchen.  Foster Memorial Church will use the dishwasher to expand their community outreach including their service at the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen.  We can now easily clean and sanitize re-usable dishes, saving both money and energy.  Through my Gold Award project, I learned that I am a good leader. I planned and carried out many successful fundraisers and further developed my organizational skills and my sense of responsibility. My project sparked an entire kitchen renovation that will have a lasting effect on Foster Memorial Church and the community.
