Caroline M. of Monson
Amigos de Guatemala
My Gold Award project aimed to make life better for Guatemalan orphans and raise awareness about their struggles. As part of my project, I made blankets with girls in my community and delivered them personally to Guatemala. I also brought letters from my Spanish class to initiate a PenPal program with the children. I spent a week volunteering in the orphanage working with the children and teaching them English. Even though we didn’t speak the same language we forged a special bond. My moments playing blocks with Marta, chasing Juan, and rocking Giselle to sleep are some of the best memories of my life. Inspired by my trip and the love of the children, upon returning I made a video of my trip in hopes of inspiring other to travel to Guatemala.
Caroline joined Girl Scouts in kindergarten, and she has earned her Bronze and Silver Awards, and is now her Gold. She has been acting in theatrical productions since middle school and was recently the lead in her school’s 9/11 memorial play.
Caroline plays on the varsity softball team, and has also run varsity winter track and played basketball. She was recently selected as a member of her school’s Global Scholar program - a program that aims to widen students’ view of the world through attending lectures and academic programs. Thanks to a Global Scholars scholarship, Caroline will travel to the Amazon and participate in an immersion program with local tribes this summer.
She is also co-president of her school’s R.I.S.E. (Reach out In Support of Ethnicity) and S.O.A.R. (Sexual Orientations Accepted and Respected) clubs and is a member of gold key admissions guides, student activities and chess club.
