Stephanie M. of Monson
Senior Fitness Trail
My Gold Award project involved creating a fitness trail for senior citizens in Monson. The trail was designed with exercise stations which highlighted activities to stretch and strengthen different parts of the body.
On June 1, 2011, a tornado devastated my community. My project was drastically affected. The tornado destroyed ALL the sports fields and damaged the senior center and town hall (Park and Recreation). I had no choice but to cease the trail and find new options. I didn’t think it was right to promise senior health encouragement without finishing what I started, and I wasn’t going to let the tornado stop me from doing my project.
So, I mapped out walking routes around the senior center, developed weight exercises for 3 levels of fitness, and donated weights to the senior center. After the re-building is complete, the fields are safe, and the community is settled, we will install the benches that were donated and complete the activity stations, thus continuing this project.
Stephanie is a graduate of Monson High School where she played varsity soccer and softball. When the 2011 tornado hit her community, Stephanie was preparing for her high school graduation. She rallied with her community in the recovery efforts and began college last September. She has now completed her freshman year at Suffolk University’s New England School of Art and Design where she made Dean’s List while holding down a job.
