Cambodian Girl Guide Connection You have the opportunity to connect with your sister Girl Guides, Khamarak Kayarith Neary, in Cambodia. In 2009, GSCWM collected school supplies and other items for Cambodian Girl Guides, who have limited resources in their daily lives. During the fall of 2010, you can help once again, by providing: friendship bracelets, elastic headbands, and stretchy silly band bracelets. The Girl Guides also enjoy personal notes and photos from the girls. Please keep the size of the items small. Donations will be distributed to Dragon Flies (ages 7-10), Guides (ages 11-14), and Rangers (ages 15-18) at the Girl Guide Promise Ceremony attended by our liaison, Dr. Mary Anne Herron, a long time Girl Scout volunteer. All items must be at the Leeds or Worcester Service Centers by September 30 or at the East Longmeadow Service Center by October 6. Include the troop number and leader’s contact information on the package and write “Attn. Judi” on it. Program Aide Core Training Ready to take your leadership skills to the next level? Girls in grades 7-12 are eligible to become Girl Scout Program Aides (PAs). You’ll be able to work with younger girls at camp, in troops, at some council events, or in a variety of specialty areas. Core Training will teach you how to work with younger girls, as well as how to lead group activities. Come learn the many ways you can volunteer as a PA! Community Harvest Project Community Harvest Project brings together volunteers - individuals and families, as well as school, church and civic groups - to grow healthy vegetables. Together, they grow tens of thousands of pounds of tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, squash and other healthy foods, all of which are donated for hunger relief. On Saturday, September 25, harvest food for the needy in central Massachusetts; and harvest a crop of learning, goodwill and community. The crops that girls pick at the Community Harvest farm will be donated to the Worcester County Food Bank. Dress in layers for the weather (rain or shine), wear closed toe shoes, and bring water, bug spray and sunscreen. Girl Scouts of all ages are welcome. Sign-up as a group or individually. A minimum of 5 girls are needed to run this program, with a maximum of 30 people (including adults). October Link to Libraries Link to Libraries is a non-profit organization whose mission is to collect and distribute new and gently used books to elementary school libraries and non-profit organizations and to enhance language and literacy skills of children of all cultural backgrounds. During October, Girl Scouts are encouraged to collect books from a pre-determined list of books, which will be donated to libraries in under-served communities in western Massachusetts. Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to participate. Books must be new or gently used, with no writing in them. Books with religious content or library stamps are not accepted, nor are Disney or Golden books. A pickup is scheduled for Saturday, October 23 (10:00 AM - Noon) in the Berkshire United Way parking lot in Pittsfield (200 South Street). They work to protect water—the river, its tributaries, lakes, fish; and the land, plants, and creatures connected to that water. Don’t miss this great chance for community service - a day of cleaning up along the Connecticut River and local tributaries. Groups and individuals attending with an adult are invited to participate through Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center.* Gloves, bags, and help with trash disposal will be provided. Did you ever wonder what it feels like to have the wind in your sails and skipper a sailboat? Why not “test the waters” in this maritime sampler program! Come enjoy the day with us and enjoy sailboat rides on Lake Quinsigamond! This is a basic introduction to sailing and our main goal is to have fun-and get you out on the water! In this outdoor adventure, you're certain to find out! Crow Ledge is one of the most beautiful cliffs in north central Massachusetts -- and you're going to get a bird's eye view of it on this day of rappeling and zipping! You'll learn the basics of rappelling, starting on a steep hill and advancing to low angles of the cliff -- and ending with a steep, vertical rappel from almost 50-feet up! What do pulleys and ascenders have to do with fun? Put them together with line and find yourself zipping off the cliff through the forest canopy to the forest floor -- about a 200-foot ride - on a zip-line! This Olympic sport has been growing in popularity in recent years because it's great exercise and tons of fun! Girls and women especially excel at fencing because it's a sport that relies on lower body strength. You will be introduced to the basics of fencing through basic footwork, attack, parry, riposte and so much more! You will earn most of the requirements to the Fencing Interest Project Award (Sticking to the Point IP included). Touche! Details:
