Troop 65086 is on a mission this year to catch women in their community doing what they do. Melissa of Miscoe Hill Maple treated the troop to a private tour in Mendon during the height of this year’s maple sugaring season. Melissa and partner Bert gave fourteen of the 21 members of the Upton troop a thorough behind the scenes look at the sugaring process from a woods walk among the tapped maple trees, following the sap lines to the collection tank, where they talked about the blending of old and modern methods, percentages of water in the sap, and how they reuse all of the water they take out of the sap. Then back to the “sugar shack” where they learned about the boiling process. According to troop co-leader Lindsay, “the Girl Scouts were enthralled. They asked so many great questions, and Bert and Melissa answered all of them with extensive knowledge.” The tour ended with a taste test of the syrup they had been watching throughout and a chat about the different grades of maple syrup. “Not a speck was lost on them either, they all loved it.”
