Gov. Healey Celebrates GSLSP

BOSTON — Governor Healey today announced that parking fees will be waived at all Massachusetts state parks on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, as the state celebrates Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will also host special programs for hundreds of Girl Scouts at parks across Massachusetts, including guided hikes, wildlife activities, treasure hunts and hands-on environmental education.
Now in its eighth year in Massachusetts, Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend encourages girls and their families to explore the outdoors, learn new skills and build a lasting connection to nature. Governor Maura Healey has proclaimed September 12 and 13 as Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend in Massachusetts, continuing the state’s celebration of the annual event.
“There’s so much for kids and families to discover in our state parks – from beaches and forests to trails, wildlife and mountains,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend is a great opportunity for girls to get outside, explore our parks, learn new skills and spend time with their families. We’re proud to welcome Girl Scouts and their families to state parks across Massachusetts, and I hope they make some great memories and find a new favorite place to visit.”
“Our state parks are some of the best places for families to spend time together, explore somewhere new and enjoy the outdoors,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend gives girls and their families a chance to make those memories together while learning new skills and discovering all that Massachusetts has to offer. We’re excited to welcome them back for another great weekend in our parks.”
“For so many, an appreciation for nature and a connection to Massachusetts’ beautiful outdoor spaces begins at an early age. It is our responsibility to ensure these places and opportunities are available to everyone wanting to go out and explore,” said DCR Commissioner Nicole LaChapelle. “We are proud to partner, once again, with the Girl Scouts to ensure girls have access to outdoor recreation. By nurturing their connection with nature, we are making sure future generations are invested in the health, longevity and stewardship of our shared natural resources.”
This year, DCR is offering 11 programs at 10 state parks for Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend, including nature walks, treasure hunts, and animal activities. Each program helps qualify Scouts for their Eco Friend Brownie Badge and Eco Camper Junior Badger, as well as other nature-based badges. Scouts are also encouraged to take part in any interpretive programming currently being offered at DCR parks across the state.

All children participating in programming must be accompanied by an adult. DCR encourages all visitors wear sturdy footwear and dress in layers for maximum comfort. Visitors are also encouraged to bring water, snacks, and a fully charged cell phone. Girl Scouts should wear their uniform, sash or other Girl Scout apparel. All events, programs and activities are subject to change with the weather. Participants are urged to call ahead to confirm programs will run as planned.

Quarry Quest Treasure Hunt – Halibut Point State Park, Rockport
September 12, 2026, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Learn about the tide pools and granite cliffs of Halibut Point State Park as you explore the trails looking for a hidden treasure box. Follow clues and directions on guided hikes throughout the property.
Have to Have a Habitat! – Holyoke Heritage State Park, Holyoke
September 12, 2026, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Scouts can earn their Animal Habitats badge in this fun activity combining art and education. Participants will learn about how they can help protect and preserve animal habitats while helping paint a new mural at the park.
Estuary Exploration and Art – Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, East Falmouth
September 12, 2026, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Learn about coastal habitats and the animals that call them home. Scouts will use seine nets and dipnets to catch and study critters, then make estuary art sculptures out of recycled bottlecaps.
